Research Project: Diagnostic Tools in Mathematics – DiToM

Working group from the Postgraduate Studies Program Didactics of Mathematics, Science, and ICT in Education: Interdisciplinary Approach participates in the international research project Diagnostic Tools in Mathematics – DiToM.

DiToM is an Erasmus+ KA2 – Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices project started on January 2023 with 36 months duration. The aim of the project is to create a diagnostic instrument with which teachers will be able to measure the key skills of students in arithmetic and algebra repeatedly, at the end of two-year learning periods.

More specifically, the project based on the expertise of the collaborating members will create a set of five diagnostic tools that teachers can use to measure key numeracy and algebra skills every two years (at elementary school entry, after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th grade). The tests will include the visual-spatial skills necessary for learning numbers. In addition, the project aims to explicitly recognize special needs and propose adaptations to make the diagnostic tests inclusive. Each diagnostic instrument will consist of an assessment table, a manual with instructions for its administration, standard test print-outs for reproduction and recommended versions of the tests for students with special needs. The tests will be pilot tested and then made available to teachers in the participating countries via a project website in the respective national languages for use in their classrooms.
